Savers Are Losers
Today’s episode is about the foundation of Brad, Ryan, and Jimmy’s belief that 97% of traditional financial advice is dangerous, misleading, or wrong. We tend to praise the savers. When it comes to financial freedom, most people think the best method is to save as much money as possible. Though, the guys learned quickly how false that belief is.
Only saving money was getting them nowhere fast. It takes a genuine understanding of the real rules to move quickly in the right direction. Read on to find out the number one reason you are stuck inside your financial plan and what you can do about it so you can achieve financial freedom in 10 years or less.
Dismantling Our Commonly Held Misconceptions
Without even consciously thinking, we all tend to follow a set of rules. It is no different when it comes to our finances. Typically, the financial rules that most people follow are to get a job and start contributing to your 401(k). It’s touted as the responsible and wise thing to do. But what if following those rules is the exact thing keeping you from living the life you want.
When Ryan got out of college, he fell for the idea that he needed to save as much money as possible to have a chance at financial freedom. He didn’t question the rules he was following because it had been so ingrained in him as the thing to do. After four years of hard work and saving, Ryan felt on track. He had 100k in his retirement account and was sure he was on the right path.
Then came 2008. And with that economic crash, all the rules Ryan had been following became pointless. He lost over 70% of everything he had saved and had no one to advise him on how to move forward. Everyone he knew was in the same situation as him.
“For most people, they’ve been playing a game they’re destined to lose.”- Ryan D. Lee
The Rules of the Game
The truth Ryan, Brad, and Jimmy had to accept is that savers are losers. With that understanding, they had to learn an entirely new ruleset on how to achieve their goals. It was apparent that to achieve financial freedom, it would take learning the steps to economic success. Gone were the days of just following the crowd and wishing and hoping for the future they wanted.
“The only way to get the right answer to a problem is to set it up correctly.”- Bradley Gibb
Without a doubt, one of the critical rules for financial freedom is a focus. Savers simply have the wrong focus. It doesn’t matter where you start, how much money you make, or how much you save. What matters is that you can narrow in on your goals and not wait on a lofty promise of someday. That’s why we created the parameter of ten years or less. It is a quantifiable measure that is dependent on how focused you can be in your game plan.
The Number One Questions to Ask Yourself
Are the investments you’re in even able to deliver?- Bradley Gibb
The traditional methods aren’t congruent with living financially free. Let’s take a look at an example to illustrate why this is. Take a person with an annual income of 100k. Let’s say they’ve managed to save 250k in assets towards retirement. And that every year they save 10k towards financial freedom. To achieve independence, they desire they’ll need to make 2.5 million over the next decade. That means a rate of return of 23.79%. It’s a drastically high number to achieve within traditional means. And it’s what leads people to seek out alternative methods of investing.
Brad, Ryan, and Jimmy set out to build a community of like-minded people looking for relief and answers. They were looking for people who had followed all the rules of traditional finance but found it wasn’t getting them where they wanted. They had drive and purpose but an empty vehicle to get them to their destination.
